January 23, 2009: A young woman collapsed in the excitement during the open casting call for Canada's Next Top Model at Fairview Mall.Over 500 young women between 18 and 23 years showed up to meet casting agent Elmer Olsen and try to get onto the popular TV show. The winner of Canada'a Next Top Model will score a contract with Elmer Olsen Modelling Agency, a $100,000 beauty contract from Procter & Gamble and appear in a feature editorial spread in FASHION magazine.

Toronto, Ont. May 14, 2010: The Toronto Underground Cinema held its grand opening on Friday night at The Acacia Centre. Screening a free double-bill from the mid-'80s, the whodunit Clue and John Carpenter's Big Trouble in Little China, seemed appropriate since the indie theatre's decor still has that certain '80s retro chic aesthetic. Staff members dressed as characters from the movie Clue.

Nigel Richards, World Scrabble Champion

Toronto, Ont. Sept. 25, 2011: Nigel Richards, 44, From New Zealand, is the only two-time World Scrabble Champion after winning the 2011 title. Here Richards poses with his Scrabble rack mugshot-style, in between games at the Toronto International Scrabble Open and Human vs. Computer Showdown, three weeks before winning the championships in Warsaw, Poland. He is a shy and reclusive man. It took a lot of coersion to get him to pose for this photo.

My idea was a simple one. Create close-up headshots of some of the top Scrabble players in the world holding Scrabble racks spelling their surname with Scrabble tiles.

The trickiest part was getting some of them to pose during a tournament, when there's often little time between games.

I started this series in 2009 at the Michael Wise Memorial Tournament in Toronto, which attracted a few players representing Canada at the World Scrabble Championships.

I resumed this series at the same event in 2011, which ran concurrently with the Toronto International Scrabble Open and Human vs. Computer Showdown.

Here you'll see Scrabble portraits of former World Scrabble Champions Nigel Richards and former Canadian and World Scrabble Champion Adam Logan.

Then there's the scowling, heavy-metal-fan Jeremy Hildebrand and a the blue-haired wunderkind Jackson Smylie, 13, the youngest participant ever in the Canadian Scrabble Championships (who beat Logan in his first match, no less).

Toronto, Ont. June 27, 2010: Joshua Edgar, 18 (right) from Napanee, Ont. hugs his friend Matthew Bowers, 17, from Belleville, Ont. after being released from the facility at Toronto Film Studios, where a makeshift jail was set up to hold all the people detained by police during the G20 protests.

"This was the first time I've been arrested (for Breach of Peace) and I was just standing around, doing nothing," said Edgar. "I'm not a huge badass, but I've done some drugs and petty theft... just candy bars."

"I can't believe they spent all that money on those dog cages they put us in," said Bowers, moments after his release.

"We were kept in separate cells with six others in six-foot-by-nine-foot cages with concrete floors," says another detainee, Alexis Cummings, 27, who was visiting from Brooklyn, NY. "They made us all take our shoes off and cranked up the air conditioning all day.

"All they gave us were small cheese sandwiches every five hours or so and weren't given enough water.... I'd rather be in (New York's) Riker's Island prison. What you have here is completely wrong."

April 3, 2011: Over 2,000 people showed up at Queen's Park Sunday afternoon for SlutWalk, a protest against a recent remark by a Toronto police representative who said "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." The demonstration followed by a march to police headquarters on College St. to make a unified statement about sexual assault and victims' rights and to demand respect for all. Other Slut Walk protests followed in cities across North America, Austrlia and Europe, with the mission to spread the word that those those who experience sexual assault are not the ones at fault, without exception.

Albany, NY. July 1-4, 2011: Speed Scrabble action between two of the top young SCRABBLE players in North America, Matthew O'Connor and Jackson Smylile.

The annual Nor'easter Scrabble tournament at the Marriott hotel, hosted by Annette Tedesco, drew over 100 participants. The highlight, for many, was the barbecue at Annette's house on the Sunday evening.
