April 17, 2011: Jackson Smylie, 13, and Alex Li, 13, from Jack Miner Senior Public School, show their trophies from the Toronto School Scrabble Championships last month. They went on to represent Canada — and win — at the 2011 National School SCRABBLE Championship in Orlando, Florida this weekend, beating out 97 teams from grades five to eight from across the United States. Smylie and Li won the $10,000 top prize.

April 3, 2011: Over 2,000 people showed up at Queen's Park Sunday afternoon for SlutWalk, a protest against a recent remark by a Toronto police representative who said "women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." The demonstration followed by a march to police headquarters on College St. to make a unified statement about sexual assault and victims' rights and to demand respect for all.

Toronto School Scrabble Championships

Toronto, Ont. March 8, 2011: Theresa Nettleton, 12 (in blue sweater) and Rachael Liness, 13, from Windfields School, team up at the third annual Toronto School Scrabble Championships, held at Bessborough and Middle School.

There were 156 players from 24 schools, ranging from grade 4 to grade 8, including — new this year — a new high school division.

Jackson Smylie, 13, and Alex Li, 13, from Jack Miner Senior Public School won the tournament, with a 4-0 record. They will represent Canada at the National School Scrabble Championship in Orlando, Florida on April 15-16.

Toronto, Ont. Feb. 8, 2011: Joey, the star of War Horse, takes the stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre, during the announcement of the 2011-12 Mirvish Subscription Theatre Season.

This WWI-era drama, based on the novel by Michael Morpurgo, and in association with Handspring Puppet Company, will get its debut Feb. 2012 at the Princess of Wales Theatre. The Winner of Olivier, Evening Standard and Critics' Circle awards, it brings breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on the stage.

TTC Streetcar/Pedestrian Fatality Investigation

Toronto, Ont. Jan. 11, 2011: TTC crew and police investigate the scene of an accident on Queen St. W. at Niagara, where a streetcar dragged a pedestrian to his death at around 10:30 a.m.. Witnesses frantically tried to alert the streetcar driver, who finally stopped after travelling at least 600 meters before it came to a halt. Police confirmed dead at the scene is a man in his late 40s to early 50s, who attempted to cross the street mid-block and got lodged under the back of the streetcar. Queen St. W. between Niagara and Bathurst remained closed for most of the day for the investigation.

Toronto, Ont. Nov. 4, 2010: Carol Furtado and Dipender Singh in the Toronto production of The Merchants of Bollywood, run through a dress rehearsal Thursday afternoon.

The Merchants of Bollywood, starring Furtado and Arif Zakaria, held its Canadian premiere at the Sony Centre For The Performing Arts Thursday night. The lavish Indian dance-musical features a cast of 40 performers from Mumbai and runs until November 14.

Toronto, Ont. June 27, 2010: Joshua Edgar, 18 (right) from Napanee, Ont. hugs his friend Matthew Bowers, 17, from Belleville, Ont. after being released from the facility at Toronto Film Studios, where a makeshift jail was set up to hold all the people detained by police during the G20 protests.

"This was the first time I've been arrested (for Breach of Peace) and I was just standing around, doing nothing," said Edgar. "I'm not a huge badass, but I've done some drugs and petty theft... just candy bars."

"I can't believe they spent all that money on those dog cages they put us in," said Bowers, moments after his release.

"We were kept in separate cells with six others in six-foot-by-nine-foot cages with concrete floors," says another detainee, Alexis Cummings, 27, who was visiting from Brooklyn, NY. "They made us all take our shoes off and cranked up the air conditioning all day.

"All they gave us were small cheese sandwiches every five hours or so and weren't given enough water.... I'd rather be in (New York's) Riker's Island prison. What you have here is completely wrong."

Toronto, Ont. May 15, 2010: Yonge-Eglinton Square will soon no longer have a big, open, public space. What better way to throw a send-off party than a massive, public pillow fight?

Newmindspace, known for their public space antics mostly in Toronto's downtown core, decided to give a final hurrah on Saturday to the public square on the south-west corner of Yonge and Eglinton before the place gets encroached by more retail space later this year.

Toronto, Ont. April 26, 2010: The Pillow Fight League (PFL) world title rematch between Charley Davidson and Olivia Neutron Bomb went down at the PFL's 43rd bout Monday night at The Mod Club.

Neutron Bomb walked away victorious this time, reclaiming the world title in a hotly contested match that ended in a pinfall during round three.

These are not your typical pillow fights you’d imagine at a sleepover. The PFL has recruited a new batch of fit, fun and fearless female fighters that bring more entertainment to a show than you'd ever believe.

Mississauga, Ont. March 24, 2010: Cleanup efforts by Mississauga fire crew follow a blaze at the Active Green + Ross auto shop at 275 Dundas St. E. (near Cawthra), which started just after 7:30 a.m. Fire crews at the scene work to contain the toxic runoff caused by hazardous material like tires and propane tanks inside the store. No injuries were reported and fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Toronto, Ont. Feb. 11, 2010: Heidi Taillefer sits in the "Ligozzi" Infiniti Art Car at the Canadian International Auto Show at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Taillefer designed the car, a custom-painted Infiniti G37, commissioned through Cirque du Soleil in celebration of both company's anniversaries. The care is named after Jiacopo Ligozzi, the Florentine renaissance artist.

The one-of-a-kind car will be auctioned off for Canadian Art and the One Drop Foundation, the charity of Cirque's Guy LaLiberte.

Toronto, Ont. Oct. 24: Steven Javor, 44, and his daughter Elowyn, 7, join well over 1,000 undead who took to the streets for the Toronto Zombie Walk. The annual pre-Halloween zombie walk, which began in 2003, continues to draw larger crowds each year.
Compared to last year's zombie walk, there were more beautiful zombie brides, grooms, hockey players, Siamese twins, aerobics instructors, army officers, schoolgirls, nurses, nuns, beauty pageants, bakers, peaceniks, and Trekkies. And there were appearances by Batman and Robin, Santa Claus, Harry Potter, Beetlejuice and even a zombie Sarah Palin.

July 8, 2009: Mayor David Miller speaks during the the grand opening of the John Street Roundhouse Revitalization project, which features a newly refurbished turntable and features a unique 40,000 square foot Leon’s Furniture store, the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre and adjacent Roundhouse Park.
Owned by the City of Toronto, the Roundhouse, which was built in 1929-31, is a 32 bay semi-circular structure formerly used by Canadian Pacific to service steam passenger locomotives using nearby Toronto Union Station. It was declared a National Historic Site in 1990. In 1999, bays 1 to 11 were leased to Steam Whistle Brewery while the remaining 21 bays were unused and dormant.
